8 Ways To Organise Your Life | Victoria Jiju

Life can get really chaotic really fast. You may have numerous obligations you need to address at the same time and that's when being organised can be incredibly helpful. There are a few ways you can organise your life so it becomes a little more manageable, so let's jump into it, 8 ways to organize your life to make it more manageable. 

1. Use a Diary 
Make use of either a physical or digital diary to keep track of all your plans and obligations. You can write down everything from future plans to holidays and anything else you may need to remember.  There's nothing worse than double-booking yourself and looking unorganised  when someone asks you to do something. Consequently, make sure you pencil in all of your obligations and check in regularly to ensure you're staying organised and keeping up-to-date with all of your commitments. Diaries will help you make better use of your time by allowing you to see how much time you have available as well as where your time is being spent. They will also allow you to keep up with birthdays and other events so you don't have to rely on Facebook to tell you when it's your cousin's birthday.  

*Bonus Tip* - Keep a digitised  backup of your diary in case anything goes missing.   

2. Use To-do lists 
To-do lists should be your new best friend if you want to be more organised. To-do lists allow you to become accountable to yourself, as you are aware of how much you've achieved within a certain time frame and things you are still required to do. They allow you to stay super organised, as you are fully aware of what is going on within your life at a particular time. Make sure your to-do list is realistic as putting too many things on them at once can lead you to become overwhelmed and disheartened when you don't complete everything on it. 

3. Write Everything Down 
Use the notes app in your phone or an old fashioned pen and paper but make sure to write everything down. Regardless of how minuscule a thought that you need to remember is, try not to assume you will remember it. There is proven scientific evidence stating that we are much more likely to remember something when we write it down. This is due to the fact that writing things down takes your brain more effort and skill than simply trying to remember something. Therefore, not only do you have the physical document you've written on (paper or your notes app) your brain has more chance of remembering the thought. With this in mind, you should always write anything and everything down that you hope to remember at a later time or date.

4. Have a Regular Sleep Pattern 
An organised individual will be getting enough sleep. Getting enough sleep allows your brain to function at full capacity. When you have at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night your brain is much more likely to be accommodating of remembering and retaining information allowing you to be more organised. 5.  Remember You Can do Anything but Not Everything 
Try not to spread yourself too thin, as an introvert I don't have this problem but extroverts beware, you can do anything you want in this world but you physically can not do everything. Trying to do everything at once leads to sloppy execution and poor outcomes. Therefore, doing too many things at once may lead to your life not being quite as organised  as you may like. Make sure when you commit to new obligations you assess that you have an appropriate amount of time to commit to them and if not make sure you prioritize obligations that are more essential. E.g Finishing your assignment for uni may be prioritised over a night out with the girls. 

6. Set Realistic Timeframes
In order to be efficient and organised, you need to set realistic timeframes and deadlines.  Make sure when you're adding new events to your diary and/or a to-do list you are aware that a specific task will take a certain amount of time. For example, if you know that a particular piece of work will take two weeks to complete, you shouldn't schedule numerous other commitments so you are unable to meet the original deadline. Over scheduling yourself, simply means you won't be able to meet all of your obligations. Realistic time frames will allow you to be much more successful in the long run so make sure you plan accordingly. 

7. Regularly Declutter 
Organised people will regularly stay on top of their cleaning and decluttering duties. If you want some ideas on what to declutter check out THIS blog post here.  Make sure your house/room/bag or anything else you regularly use is organised, this will allow you to always know where things are and reduce the overall stress of your life. Regular decluttering and tidying of all areas of your life means your life should be a lot more efficient as everything should have a place or a home.

8. Regularly Check-in and Assess Your Progress 
You should regularly check-in with your diary, notes, and to-do lists to make sure that you are completing the tasks you have assigned yourself. It will also allow you to assess if you are working appropriately towards your given deadlines and give you a chance to make sure you are not over-scheduling yourself. Checking in with your organisation tools (diary, to-do lists, and notes) allows you to get rid of anything you don't need and re-prioritise other areas. All in all, regular check-ins should allow your life to run more smoothly.

  6. Excellent article with great tips! I find the last tip to be extra helpful for me. You have to assess your progress and make adjustments where needed. If something is no longer working for you, or needs extra attention, this is where you can identify that and make changes.
